Who was our Man of the Match against Wolves?

Saturday 13 May 2023 19:03

Manchester United recorded a vital 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League at a sun-kissed Old Trafford.

Strikes from Anthony Martial and substitute Alejandro Garnacho – returning from a two-month injury lay-off – secured the points that keep the Reds firmly in the driving seat for a top-four finish.

Chances were at a premium in the first half but Martial, who started up front in the absence of Marcus Rashford, netted his eighth goal of the season just after the half-hour mark, sweeping home from close range to cap a fine team move involving Bruno Fernandes and Antony.

Wolves, who had already secured their top-flight status last week, improved after the break and caused United a few nervy moments, with manager Julen Lopetegui making five substitutions in a bid to find an equaliser.

Watch the best action from our crucial Premier League meeting with Wolves, at Old Trafford...

But after entering the fray to rapturous applause from the Old Trafford faithful with 10 minutes to go, Garnacho sealed the victory in stoppage time as he charged onto a Fernandes through-ball and finished calmly past debutant goalkeeper Daniel Bentley, who had produced an inspired performance to prevent the Reds wrapping the game up sooner.

But which Red emerged top of our Man of the Match poll across ManUtd.com and the United App?

The voting recognised Garnacho’s welcome return and the contribution of Antony, who assisted Martial’s opener with a clever ball across goal, and came close to finding the net himself on several occasions.

But it was our skipper on the afternoon, Fernandes, who came out on top with 50 per cent of the votes after a typically all-action display.

Restored to pull the strings from his customary no.10 role in midfield, Fernandes was at his creative best and both of our goals were the result of his eye-of-the-needle through-balls.

Our Portuguese magnifico was only denied a goal himself by two smart saves from Bentley, while the captain also fired narrowly over with a free-kick.

He was a clear winner of our poll ahead of Garnacho (14 per cent) and Antony (12 per cent), scooping the Man of the Match accolade for the seventh time this season. Congratulations to our no.8!
