Who was our Man of the Match against Leicester?

Sunday 19 February 2023 17:15

Manchester United put on a devastating display at Old Trafford to earn a convincing 3-0 win against Leicester City, which moves us three points behind second-placed Manchester City in the Premier League table.

Marcus Rashford broke the deadlock midway through the second half as he finished emphatically beyond Foxes stopper Danny Ward, and our no.10 later doubled United's lead just before the hour mark – his composed finish in front of the Stretford End was just reward as we came out of the blocks at lightning speed in the second half.

Jadon Sancho came off the bench at the break and was integral to our flowing attacking play, and he rounded off a fine individual display by scoring our third. The Reds' no.25 has now scored in back-to-back Premier League games at Old Trafford.

Aside from the goalscorers, though, there were worthy candidates all over the pitch for our Man of the Match award – among them Victor Lindelof stepping in with an assured display at the back, while Bruno Fernandes was a midfield metronome all afternoon as he registered two assists.

There were plenty of other deserving candidates, but who did fans select as the winner? Find out more below…

Who was Man of the Match in United's superb victory over Leicester?

It’s now 24 goals and 11 official Manchester United Man of the Match awards for the season for Marcus Rashford, whose unstoppable form shows no signs of letting up.

After a testing opening period in which the visitors threatened United’s goal, Marcus struck at a crucial time to provide us with the lead and a sense of calm for the final 20 minutes of the first half.

From there on, the Reds were dominant, and our in-form forward helped us to take another huge step towards the three points with his second goal, which came 11 minutes into the second half. He timed his run expertly to latch on to Fred’s pass in behind while staying level with Wout Faes in the last line of the visiting defence, before finishing beyond Ward again.

The forward then played a role in lending possession to Sancho in the build-up to the third goal as his compatriot went on to complete the scoring for the afternoon.

Such was Rashford’s involvement all afternoon, he received 66 per cent of the vote.

Marcus takes in the adoration of the Stretford End at full-time.

There was acknowledgement in the voting for United's fellow stars too, though, as Fernandes got a well-deserved nod for his all-round midfield display and involvement in all three goals, receiving 15 per cent of the vote.

David De Gea enjoyed a much quieter second half, but his first-half heroics did not go unrecognised by our supporters, with the Spaniard receiving 11 per cent of the vote on the day where he equalled Peter Schmeichel’s clean sheet record for the club of 180 successful shutouts.

Congratulations to Marcus on winning our Man of the Match poll!
