A tough-tackling midfielder with a penchant for a pass, Manuel Ugarte signed for Manchester United from Paris Saint-Germain on deadline day in August 2024.
Ugarte was born in Montevideo in Uruguay and began his career for local side City Park, before joining the youth system of Primera Division team Fenix. By the age of 15, Ugarte had progressed into Fenix's senior side and was included in their Copa Sudamericana squad. He was a striker then. On 4 December 2016, Manuel made his senior debut aged 15 years and 233 days, becoming the youngest-ever player to play professionally in Uruguay. By the age of 18, Ugarte had transitioned into a midfield role and was captain of Fenix, scoring his first senior goal on 10 March 2019. Manuel's club form led to a call-up for Uruguay's Under-23s, and he played regularly as La Celeste finished third at the 2020 CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic tournament. The midfielder's rise had caught the attention of Portuguese outfit Famalicao, who signed him in December 2020. After three months in Portugal, Ugarte received his first senior call-up for Uruguay, for World Cup qualifiers against Argentina and Bolivia. These matches were suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic, so Manuel would have to wait until 5 September to make his international debut for Uruguay, in a 4-2 win over Bolivia. Ugarte spent just six months at Famalicao before being snapped up by Primeira Liga giants Sporting Lisbon, making his debut for the Lions on 14 August 2021. The midfielder quickly established himself as an important player for Ruben Amorim's side, starting regularly in domestic fixtures and in the Champions League, racking up impressive numbers for tackles and interceptions in the process. Ugarte was part of Uruguay's squad at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, although the midfielder didn't make an appearance for La Celeste at the tournament. On 7 July 2023, Paris Saint-Germain acquired the midfielder and by the end of the 2023/24 season the Uruguayan had contributed to the French side winning a domestic treble of Ligue 1, the Coupe de France and the Trophee des Champions. The Copa America followed in the summer of 2024, where the 23-year-old played in all of his nation's games as they came third in the tournament. On 30 August 2024, Manchester United completed a deal to bring Ugarte to Old Trafford.
