The local lad moved to Leeds United, aged 16, and went on to represent Newcastle United and Spanish giants Real Madrid, before returning to Boro, initially on loan before joining on a permanent basis. After a switch to Tottenham Hotspur, he scored the winner for the north Londoners in the 2008 League Cup final, against Chelsea, and won eight senior caps for England. He returned to Middlesbrough again, following a spell with Stoke City, and turned to coaching, upon his retirement. Appointed Middlesbrough manager in 2019, he then worked at Bournemouth, where he became caretaker boss in 2021, taking the Cherries into the Championship play-offs.
