United Players' Player of the Year announced
Luke Shaw has collected the Players' Player of the Year prize as reward for his consistently excellent performances in the 2020/21 season.
The left-back has been outstanding this term in both defence and attack, and he has beaten off some stiff competition to show the high esteem in which he is held among his team-mates.
After also earning an England recall ahead of the European Championship, the defender has much to look forward to, with the Reds gearing up for the Europa League final against Villarreal. Although he appeared in the 2016 Community Shield, this is set to be his first appearance in a final for the Reds.
Luke timed his only goal of the season to perfection, bursting forward to claim a memorable strike in the derby at Manchester City that provided some breathing space in a 2-0 victory against the evenutal champions.
He has also supplied five assists in the division, including two in one game (for Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Edinson Cavani) in the 9-0 demolition of his former club Southampton.
This is the second time that the dressing room has crowned Luke as its annual winner, as he also got his hands on the trophy in 2018/19.
Since its inception in 2006, only three men have previously won it more than once. Cristiano Ronaldo was the recipient in both 2006/07 and 2007/08, while there were five years between Antonio Valencia's two successes (2011/12 and 2016/17).
David De Gea has got the nod on three separate occasions - 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2017/18.
Shaw succeeds Anthony Martial, who secured the prize last year.
Scott McTominay and Aaron Wan-Bissaka were two of the players who told us they had voted for the popular full-back.
"He's been top; really, really good," said Scott. "Like really, really good. It's no surprise to me that he's been that good."
Aaron admitted: “I gave my vote to Luke but I think Bruno [Fernandes] was up there as well. Luke has been the standout for me, putting in the performances and that pushes me as well, to compete with him, to bring the best out of both of us. He's been positive throughout, making the most of every game. He's not taken his foot off the pedal."
Congratulations, Luke!
