Fernandes wins Goal of the Season award

Tuesday 18 May 2021 15:00

We’re delighted to announce that Bruno Fernandes has won Manchester United’s Goal of the Season award for 2020/21.

The Portuguese playmaker has found the net 28 times so far this term, which is a record for a Premier League midfielder in a single campaign across all competitions, beating Frank Lampard’s mark of 27 set in 2010.

It’s fair to say there have been some spectacular strikes included in that tally, with Fernandes’s goals against Everton, Istanbul Basaksehir, Newcastle, Roma and West Brom included in the 20-strong shortlist, which was released last Tuesday.

After almost a week of voting, however, we have a clear winner: the 26-year-old’s astonishing effort against the Toffees during the exciting 3-3 draw at Old Trafford in February this year.

Bruno poses with Ole as he picks up his Goal of the Season award.

With United a goal up at the time, Fernandes received the ball from Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the right, in a position seemingly ripe for crossing into the box – Edinson Cavani had scored our opener and looked typically alert with his movement as Bruno controlled the pass.

Taking a touch to set himself, the former Sporting man noticed that Everton midfielder Tom Davies had pre-emptively gone to block the cross, leaving a modicum of space for him to whip the ball over Ben Godfrey and the stretching Robin Olsen and into the back of the net. Sublime!

Unsurprisingly, it was the winner of our Goal of the Month award for February, but it was also adjudged to be the best scored during the month across the Premier League.

Now it has received the ultimate recognition from United supporters, completing an end-of-term awards double for Fernandes in the process.

It was revealed earlier today that the Portuguese playmaker has been crowned the club’s Player of the Year – also voted for by United supporters – for a second consecutive campaign.

Bruno's stunning strike against Everton in February 2021 was our last Goal of the Season winner...

He now becomes the first Red since Robin van Persie, back in 2013, to hold both the annual Player and Goal accolades at the same time. Well done, Bruno!

Fernandes also came second in the voting, with his breakaway strike at Newcastle a very different type of goal to the Everton effort.

Two efforts from Paul Pogba and an Edinson Cavani header rounded out your top five…
