Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has been encouraged by Facundo Pellistri's eye-catching debut for the club.

The Uruguay international, who represented his country at the World Cup, has had to be patient since joining the Reds from Penarol in 2020.

Following two loan spells with Alaves, the winger has had a couple of injury problems and been an unused substitute but grasped the opportunity to impress in the closing stages of the 3-0 win over Charlton Athletic that took Ten Hag's side through to the last four of the Carabao Cup.

Pellistri not only sparkled going forward, down the right, but made one vital contribution in defence as well with some calm work at the back. His night was topped off with an assist, providing the ball that Marcus Rashford despatched past Ashley Maynard-Brewer to make it 2-0.

The South American can be delighted with his output and push for more minutes during the packed schedule that the Reds face in the coming weeks.

"I see a future in him," said Ten Hag after the game. "He is doing really well and we have to see what is the best [for him]. He is progressing. Against Everton [in a behind-closed doors friendly], I was really happy with his performance.

"I was happy with his performance at the World Cup so his progress is really good and now he is coming on and has an effect. So that's the next step that I say: 'well done Pelli, keep going'."

In a separate interview, the manager said: “I mentioned already Pellistri came on and it was a debut. It was not long but he was really lively, some good actions and also the assist on the second goal."

United face three big games in the space of eight days, starting with Manchester City on Saturday before away matches in London against Crystal Palace and Arsenal.
