Report: United 3 Charlton Athletic 0

Tuesday 10 January 2023 22:13

Manchester United are safely through to the last four of the Carabao Cup after a 3-0 victory over Charlton Athletic.

Erik ten Hag's side took the lead in the first half, through Antony's unstoppable curling effort.

A late brace from substitute Marcus Rashford, however, would seal the win for the Reds in style to continue his fine goalscoring form.

The victory sees us into the two-legged semi-finals of the competition once again, with a place at Wembley at stake.

League One side Charlton Athletic were United’s third Carabao Cup victims in 2022/23, as we moved into the semi-finals…

FIRST HALF - A GOOD START

Ten Hag’s Reds were utterly relentless for the opening 45 minutes in front of the Old Trafford faithful.

Starting on the left, Alejandro Garnacho was electric for United and took no time in introducing himself to the Charlton backline. The Argentina Under-20 international came close to creating the opener two minutes in, but his ball into the box was hit well over the bar from Diogo Dalot.

The 18-year-old was at the core of our opening attacking display, and was almost on the scoresheet after wonderful play down the left saw him cut inside, but his curling effort was off target.
Fans would have to wait just 21 minutes for the player of that number to break the deadlock, though. Antony picked the ball up on the edge of the area from Fred, before unleashing a wonderful curling effort on goal that sailed past a diving Ashley Maynard-Brewer to give us the lead in emphatic fashion.

Just over 10 minutes later, the Reds were almost two to the good courtesy of a free-kick from Fred. The Brazil midfielder came agonisingly close to putting his strike away but for the intervention of the woodwork. Moments later, Charlton had their own free-kick just outside the box but Albie Morgan couldn’t hit the target.

The Reds continued to flood forward in search of a second, but we went into the break with a narrow lead.

SECOND HALF - INTO THE LAST FOUR

Chasing the game, Charlton came out in the second half in search of a leveller – and immediately carved out a goalscoring opportunity. Some intricate play resulted in a long-range effort from Scott Fraser, but it didn’t trouble Tom Heaton in the United goal.

Five minutes into the second half, however, the Reds were close to doubling our lead. Fred played an excellent diagonal ball to first-half substitute Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who then played it across goal into the path of Anthony Elanga, who scored a tap-in but it was chalked off for offside.

With 25 minutes to go, Garnacho had the chance to double our lead following a sublime through ball from Scott McTominay, but the Charlton shot-stopper read the situation well and saved his effort comfortably.

Alejandro Garnacho was a constant menace to the Charlton defenders, especially during the first half…

We continued to carve out chances to put the game to bed, with one of the best falling to Christian Eriksen. The Danish midfielder zipped his effort towards the goal of Maynard-Brewer who pulled out a blinding save after seeing it late.

Our patience would soon pay off, though. Casemiro’s incredible pass across the field into the path of Facundo Pellistri kickstarted the goal scoring move, with the latter – on his competitive debut – playing through Rashford. Our no.10 took a few touches to find his feet before finishing off the move and scoring in his sixth straight game since the restart.

Deep into stoppage time, Rashford added another to our tally after being found by Casemiro. Through on goal, he comfortably eased the ball past the Charlton keeper to add extra gloss to the scoreline.
