There are things we need to improve

“I think until the first goal they were better. Then after that we had some good moments, but I think the second goal killed us. There are things we will take from this game and things we need to improve, but there is no time to cry. We're already thinking about Crystal Palace. I have already been checking the next few weeks - we have Palace at home, Southampton away, there are some games between the top six teams. If we want to be in the top four soon we have to win the next games. Tottenham I think play Arsenal and Chelsea so there are some games between them but we have to win Palace at home and Southampton away.”

Jose Mourinho
My assessment of the match

“Not a bad performance at all, far from it. One thing is a bad performance, another is a performance with mistakes. Ours was a performance with mistakes. All of the three goals were mistakes and we were punished by that. We were in the game until the 80th minute or something, even the home supporters felt that, but the third mistake punished us with a result that I don’t think we deserve.”

Jose Mourinho
We struggled after a tough week

"I think the fact that the week was an easy week for them and such hard work for us, it made a difference. Not just from the physical point of view, but even more than that by the mental point of view. The focus, the concentration, the mental effort to play against Juventus in that game is completely different to winning at home 6-0 and enjoying a relaxed game. We felt it. I think we made some individual mistakes for the goals, were probably a consequence of that. Don’t ask me to tell names because I refuse to say that. But you analyse the goals and they are individual mistakes."

Jose Mourinho
What I've told the players

“There was a fantastic character from the team and a great effort by everybody. Fellaini shouldn’t play for 90 minutes because it was too much for him. He should be on the bench and come on later in the game. But he had to play because of Paul’s absence. So it was not an easy week for us but I just told the players they’re playing much better than before; we are much stronger, we are much more compact. Now we have to not let the defeat disappoint us. Sad, yes, but not too disappointed. In two weeks’ time we play at home against Crystal Palace and, from that game, we have to try to get the points.”

Jose Mourinho
The game changed after the penalty

“Everybody changed after the penalty. Even Pep, even them. They felt it then and they became a counter-attack team. They have the power to do that. They bring Sane on and put Sterling in the front. They put Gundogan in the middle of the park to give them more consistency and fresh legs. They have the team to do that, but everybody felt it.”

Jose Mourinho
Will Pogba be fit to face Palace?

“We have to wait and see. Of course, no national team, no chance. That’s the evolution and hopefully, yes, Palace then a final against Young Boys. We need three points to get closer to qualification in the Champions League.”

Derby day defeat for United

It's over at the Etihad Stadium and it's Manchester City that take the spoils. The hosts opened the scoring in the twelfth minute through David Silva and doubled their lead shortly after the break through Sergio Aguero. Anthony Martial gave the Reds some hope with a goal from the penalty spot, however Ilkay Gundogan scored late on to put City out of sight.

City restore two-goal cushion

Ilkay Gundogan gets his name on the scoresheet as City score their third. The German midfielder has enough time and space to control the cross into the box by Bernardo Silva and calmly slot the ball into the net.
