Ralf Rangnick
A good win for us

"I think we showed a reaction after the Wolves game, that is what everyone expected from us. We knew it would be very difficult against Villa. In the first half, I thought we did well. In the second half, we were on the counterattack and we could have made more of those situations. We took the wrong decisions at times but when we changed to a diamond in midfield, we had more control. We fought well as a team together when it was important, and in the end, it was a good win.” *Speaking to BBC Sport.

Ralf Rangnick
Credit to De Gea

"We have to develop the team into a clean-sheet team and that was another one today, but David De Gea was outstanding again for me today. I would have wanted him to have less saves in total, I think they had four or five shots on goal, but again we can still improve even in that area."

Ralf Rangnick
We'll keep working

"To say that this was a perfect game, nobody would believe that, of course it was not. We still have quite a few things we can get better at but the clean sheet was important today and we worked together. Still, a lot of things to improve, but it is easier to do that with a 1-0 win."

Raphael Varane
A spirited performance

“It was an intensive match. I think that in some moments during the game, we had to suffer and we were together and the spirit was good. Clean sheet and the victory too, that’s very good for us.”

Raphael Varane
Tonight's result

“It’s very important for our confidence. I think we just have to be focused and be together and play with energy. Sometimes we want more control during the game but when it’s not possible, we have to fight and we showed a good spirit today.”

Raphael Varane
Preparations for Saturday's league game

“We know what we did this game, we are waiting for another fight, another intense game. So, we have to recover first and prepare well the for another fight [with Villa].”

Lou Macari
A confidence-boosting victory

"Hopefully that will give them a great deal of confidence. A win helps, a clean sheet helps, and now go to Villa Park on Saturday and beat them [Aston Villa] there, that would help as well if they can do it."

Alex Bruce
Reds' fight will please Rangnick

"I think United started well, they got the early goal and I think they hung on well. They defended well, had some luck and I think Ralf Rangnick will be happy with the resilience that they showed."

Danny Webber
United were well tested tonight

"It was tough as expected. They came with two strikers that would cause you problems on most days, Buendia in behind, McGinn in midfield, their regular back four. Villa came and gave it a real good go and they'll now know more about what they'll be up against when we face them again on Saturday."

Mikey Partington
Job done

Scott McTominay’s early goal is enough to see off Aston Villa at Old Trafford and ensure our progression to the fourth round of the FA Cup. It would be fair to say that the game could have gone either way, but Rangnick’s Reds weathered a strong second-half storm from the visitors to stay ahead and go on to secure an important win. A home tie with Championship side Middlesbrough in the fourth round is the reward for tonight's work, to come on the weekend of 5/6 February.

El Ghazi lofts wide

A welcome sight for United as Anwar El Ghazi digs a shot out, but it flies wide of the target. A few more seconds tick away before David De Gea launches it high into the night sky, here in M16.
