Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
I am pleased by van de Beek's debut

"He has a great attitude and energy, and he is one of the better ones I know for finding space and sniffing out space. We need that because when we get round them - not often enough - and put crosses in, there are not enough bodies in the box and he gave us that."

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
My view of the VAR incident

"For me it is not a penalty, it is very harsh. Then it is a great save by David and then a very harsh decision against him. It is probably the right one if you follow the rules, because his foot is probably one inch off the line, with his heel, but who knows what would have happened. That is not the decision that lost us the game."

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
Palace's pre-season helped them

"You could see they were sharp, they were strong, they have really drilled the system, so they were exactly what we thought they were going to be. I was hoping and thinking we were going to be better than we were."

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
We need to improve and quickly

"I am very disappointed. I think it shows that we are short. We are short in game time, fitness, sharpness and we need to improve quickly. These were three points that we wanted and we needed. There are 37 games to go, but this is a wake-up call. But it is also something that we knew we had to face when we went so far into Europe. We had a short preparation time, but that is the reality so there are no excuses."

Donny van de Beek
Lack of fitness no excuse

"We trained good, and my feeling was very positive, but we played too slowly and were too long with the ball. Against an opponent like Crystal Palace, you need to speed up the game to create something. It was not good enough."

We lacked rhythm

The only bright spot for United was the introduction of Donny, and that he very coolly and calmly took his first goal really well. But we had no rhythm, no sharpness, and the key players who you expect to help you win matches were just not on the ball today.

Wes Brown
Van de Beek a positive

We've got Donny in - he did his part when he came on with a brilliant debut goal. It's a special occasion for him, but he'll be devastated that we've not won the game. But that's all you can ask for: he got involved straight away, put himself about, and scored a nice goal.

Palace's pre-season showed

It was very disappointing. All credit to Crystal Palace. They pulled off their plan this afternoon: they were tight and counterattacked on us. We were a little bit sluggish; they looked a little bit sharper than us. It was a tough watch, because you're expecting the lads to be raring to go, but it looked like Palace were much more match-fit than us, having played last week.

Bryan Robson
Shaw United's best performer

I thought Luke did pretty well in the game. Other than that, though, there weren't really any outstanding performances from us. Fernandes was busy, and kept wanting the ball, so I think he did okay again today. But that creative part wasn't there. Our movement wasn't up to the usual standard.

Credit to Palace

A bad day at the office. They didn't look sharp, the boys. Palace passed the ball well, closed us down, kept their shape. You've got to give them credit. We were poor, but Palace defended very well and, as we know, they're always very dangerous on the counterattack.

Palace spoil United's opening day

It's a sobering afternoon for Solskjaer's team, as Crystal Palace win 3-1 at Old Trafford. Goals from Andros Townsend and Wilf Zaha (two) did the damage, though a debut strike from Donny van de Beek was a bright spot for the home side.
