"There's disappointment in there. With ten men we got back into the game, but penalties is always difficult. When you score seven you think you've done enough to win, but it wasn't to be. But I'm not sure that we did enough in 90 minutes to win the game. When you're playing these games against teams from lower divisions, it's tough. They had more intensity than us. We have to show more intensity and we got punished."
"I was commenting with Michael and Kieran on the bench. We went in the first half 40 minutes without scoring a goal and then in the second half they started better than us. "Immediately after they equalised we were on top of it, we started creating again, we were dangerous and why, after the 1-1, and then why after the 2-1, even with one man less, I think we need to educate ourselves to being mentally stronger."
"We are playing against good teams with good young players, with speed, with intensity; they give great intensity to the game. They wanted to press, they pressed for every goal and we need to respect, we need to match that mentality. I'm obviously sad with going out, but we didn't lose the match, which I think is important for us and the penalty shootout is always what we know."
"The question is why not before; why we always have to get that equaliser of the opponent to then have that reaction, because we had the reaction with the equaliser not just after the 2-1, so that's the question and that's why we are now in the dressing room [a] sad but calm dressing room."
"They scored the goal, a reaction of pride, of desire of trying and even with one less player we get an equaliser and then the penalty shootout is a lottery and we missed one. We knew that if we go past the seventh we knew we were going to be in trouble with Jones, with Eric, with Lee - not good penalty takers, but they took it all well and we missed one."
"My words at half-time were similar to the words against Wolves where I told the players that the result was open and we needed to close it, but again we concede one goal. I don't think it was a free-kick at all but the kid hit a fantastic shot. But then we had an immediate reaction. We hit the post, we created more chances, but then comes the red card and then you are in more trouble."
It's deflating. It's a blow for us, but all credit to Derby - they did extremely well. When you score so early in the game, you can suffer from relaxing a bit and United did. We did well to get that equaliser, but unfortunately it wasn't quite enough.
