David De Gea
The team is stronger now

"It was important to get the three points, this is a really tough game, we pushed a lot and they put a lot of persons in the box, so it is a really important game for us. We did well, we won and we are happy. “The team is playing better, we are keeping control of the games. It was just for a bit at the end when we had problems, but I think the team is stronger now, we feel really confident, so now we have to keep looking forward and keep this level.”

You always hope that they fall to you like that, and on my left foot. It was a nice one!

Chris Smalling

Jose Mourinho
Fellaini's vital contribution

"He [Marouane Fellaini] is finding a very simple way to sync football and play football. It's not just that Marouane is strong in the air and can help the defenders against teams who play in this way - aggressive and lots of challenges in the air - but also the simple way he's thinking football and playing football. I'm really happy with his contribution."

Jose Mourinho
Praise for Lukaku and De Gea

"[Lukaku's] sliding tackle after a 70-metre run in the right-back position says everything about what I want from my team. When you get in trouble, you need to resist, and you only resist if you are a team. And then David, in the last action, his hands were there for us."

Jose Mourinho
We knew we would get chances

"The sending off against Burnley was difficult, because there was still 20 or 25 minutes to play, but [still] it could have been crucial in a defensive set piece or a corner. Matic had a job to do and he wasn't there to do that. They created imbalance and emotion in that last few minutes but, again, I think if Paul scores the goal in the last action of the first half, we go home, job done. "In that last half an hour, maybe the ambition was a bit down. We gave them the chance to get a bit aggressive and then they scored the goal. Of course, we knew we would have the chances to score the third goal. That's why we play Anthony Martial and Javi [Gracia] went a bit more offensive with two attacking full-backs. I thought we could always score the third goal and kill. We had lots of these half-chances but we didn't [finish] and the game was open until the end."

Jose Mourinho
We could have put the game to bed

"I think we should be winning three or four-nil and have put the game to bed. When you concede a goal in an emotional place like Vicarage Road and against a team that is dangerous - the way they play is direct and dangerous in set pieces - it's always going to be difficult."

FT

Chris Smalling
We fought together for the win

"I think when you're on top and you're 2-0 up there's always that danger when they get that goal. But I think we were worth a third goal and we kept going, but it was a battle and we had to dig in."

Romelu Lukaku
Our quality made the difference

"Credit to Watford. They are there because they play a certain type of football and we needed to match that. The quality of our team made the difference in the first half. In the second half, I think we were too sloppy but another win and now we have to keep going."

FT

Danny Webber

"Good play goes both ways. In the first half United played some great attacking stuff, but in the second you can't fault the way they defended. They got blocks in, got bodies in the way - especially Smalling and Fellaini - and that's often the side of the game that gets forgotten."

Full Time

United hang on, thanks to some late heroics from David De Gea. Watford made a great fight of it in the second period, but some stout defending and two first-half strikes from Lukaku and Smalling proved enough - despite Nemanja Matic's late dismissal. It's a superb three points for the Reds, who are the first team to take points off the Hornets in 2018/19.
