Martial voted September Player of the Month

Anthony Martial has been voted Manchester United's Player of the Month by fans after a series of dazzling displays in September.

The Reds impressively scored 22 goals in seven matches across all competitions across the month and, as you might expect, three of the four nominated players for the prize were forwards. That noteworthy list included Martial, Marouane Fellaini, Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku.

A poll on the club’s official Twitter account @ManUtd decided who won the trophy and a whopping 187,936 votes were cast by fans – which is the highest-ever total in a Player of the Month poll.

Martial was the overwhelming winner with 41 per cent, ahead of second-placed Lukaku on 31 per cent. Fellaini finished in third with 20 per cent and Rashford four with a respectable eight per cent.

It is the third time the 21-year-old has won our Player of the Month award, after scooping it twice during his debut season in December 2015 and May 2016.

This season, Martial has followed his French compatriot Paul Pogba, who claimed the accolade for August following his fine start to the campaign.

WHY DID HE WIN IT?

Martial was the standout performer in the 4-1 wins over Burton Albion and CSKA Moscow in the Carabao Cup and UEFA Champions League, scoring in each game and winning the Man of the Match awards on both occasions. The France international also netted in the 4-0 Premier League success over Everton.

As well as his goals, Anthony proved himself to be a devastating creative force in September and his work on the left wing contributed to four assists for team-mates. Amazingly, across the month, he was involved in a United goal every 41 minutes during his six appearances. That’s quite a stat!

Martial also made his 100th appearance for United against Crystal Palace last weekend and marked the milestone by setting up Lukaku for the final goal in the Reds’ rampant 4-0 victory.
Praise for Anthony Martial

"I see a great improvement in the person, in the mood, in the face, in the body language."

Jose Mourinho

DESERVED PRAISE

On 22 September, Jose Mourinho heaped praise on Martial’s attitude and suggested the former AS Monaco starlet is enjoying his football more.
“I see a great improvement in the person,”
he said.

“I see it in his mood, his face, his body language. If you want one word: happiness. I am very pleased with his attitude overall, which means it’s easier for him to play well. He's a happy guy, he's working extremely well. If he starts matches he tries to do well and if he goes on from the bench, even if it is for just 10 minutes, he tries to enjoy it and to give something extra in his time on the pitch.”

Jesse Lingard, a fellow forward and youngster, also believes his good friend is set for an excellent campaign. The Academy graduate told us: “When Anthony is running at your, your defenders are on the back foot. If he continues to do that throughout the season then he'll be a force.”
