The France Football Federation confirmed on Sunday afternoon that Anthony Martial has withdrawn from international duty and returned to Manchester United due to an injury.
Martial was expected to play in France’s Euro 2020 qualifying matches against Moldova and Iceland, but he has now been replaced in Didier Deschamps' group by Atletico Madrid winger Thomas Lemar.
“Anthony Martial is suffering from recurring problems in the right knee. He again felt severe pain in his right knee after Saturday's match against Wolverhampton.”
Anthony is now expected to be assessed at the Aon Training Complex and, as it stands, it remains unclear if the exciting forward will be available for our next match, against Watford on 30 March.
Meanwhile, Sweden have also confirmed that United no.2 Victor Lindelof will not feature in their upcoming European Championship qualifiers against Romania and Norway for personal reasons.
The in-form defender has been replaced in the squad by New York City FC's Anton Tinnerholm.
“It is, of course, sad that Victor left but I fully understand and respect his decisions,”
said Sweden head coach Janne Andersson.
