Benjamin Sesko is an illuminating subject as he appears on the latest episode of the Inside Carrington podcast, which is available to watch now.
It was an ideal time to catch up with our Slovenian striker, just days after his marvellously taken equaliser at West Ham.
That effort of course formed a central part of the conversation with hosts Liam Bradford, Helen Evans and Wes Brown, as did his recent winner at the Stretford End, against Fulham.
The gang also touched upon Sesko’s route to becoming United’s frontman, from starting as a goalkeeper, like his father, to leaving home at 15 and learning to speak both English and German in Salzburg.
One of the most interesting facets centred on Ben’s meticulous preparation, and the way he goes around making sure that he is both physically and mentally at his best.
The 22-year-old is a big believer in meditation and visualisation techniques and has a hard and fast routine that he likes to stick to whether he’s due to play or not.
“If I take a day off, I always try to wake up at seven o'clock,”
he said.
“It's always kind of my routine to always keep it up, especially when I have a day off, as I try to enjoy it as much as possible.
“So I’ll get my coffee, and then I’m big on doing visualisations and meditations. I’ve been doing this for a couple of years – it just became my daily routine.
“Then I’ll probably go for some treatment and gym work, if possible. I like to enjoy my day off. I like to play basketball and try to find ways to play a little bit, and get active.
“I’m the kind of guy who doesn’t like to stay in one place for too long, so I’m always active.
“Then, at the end, I’ll try and read a book and try to get some knowledge out of it, and some sofa time, which is very important.
“I don't try to change so much on game day,” he continued. “I just try to put the focus where it has to be.
“Obviously, my meditation is really important because it just keeps me calm and in the place where I have to be.
“In the morning, with Diogo [Dalot], we do the ice bath, like up to the neck just to have a bit of a shock, get the body activated. Then the rest is just meetings, then lunch and then the game.”
Ben then expanded on the meditation side of things, as Wes asked him whether or not he sets targets for himself on the pitch.
“The meditation is more about breathing, being with yourself. But visualisation, what you just said, I’m doing that every morning before I start to do everything else.
“I really do believe in it, I really do believe in setting goals and appreciating the things that I have and that I’ve done.
“I think you get everything back, you know, from the all the hard work, appreciation and visualisation of what you do want.
“I try to always tell my family or friends to try it, because everyone has some kind of stress in life.
“It's normal, but like try to do breathing, at least. You don't have to do meditation because meditation is quite hard to get into because it's a lot of thoughts, especially if you are never used to it.
“But you have to give it a try, and you have to give it time because it takes a couple of weeks, maybe even months. You have to focus on the breathing.”
Sesko's groundwork seems to be bearing fruit lately, as he's scored five times in seven appearances since the turn of the year.
The statistics are even more impressive when you consider it's one goal for every 66 minutes on the pitch, with the Slovenian having come on as a substitute in each of the last four outings.
Hopefully, he can keep it up across the final third of the campaign, as the Reds fight for a place in the UEFA Champions League next term.
