Fernandes wins Man of the Match for Villa display

Bruno Fernandes was the winner of our Man of the Match poll, following Sunday's win over Aston Villa - and by a landslide margin.

The skipper's two assists - setting up Casemiro's opener and Matheus Cunha's effort to restore our lead - took his tally to 16 in the top-flight this term, and 100 overall in all competitions during his time as a Red.

That figure is the highest-ever recorded in a single Premier League season by any Red, beating Sir David Beckham's previous record of 15 from the 1999/2000 campaign.

Poll: Man of the Match | Who gets your vote after United 3 Villa 1?

Among fans casting their vote in our poll in the United App and on ManUtd.com, 78 per cent opted for Fernandes as our top performer.

The Portuguese was, again, at his productive best, creating six chances in the contest, of course, including those two assists and setting Benjamin Sesko free for another clear opportunity late on.

Casemiro finished second, with 10 per cent, and Cunha was in third (5%).

Speaking to MUTV after the game, Bruno was asked about having reached three figures for assists in a red shirt.

“Obviously, it's not something I dream about or thought about but I always want to help the team to get [what we want] in most of the games,” he responded.

“Scoring goals and assisting is a big part of my game. I'm very pleased today worked out and made us win the game.

”Until the end of the season, I want to try to keep helping the team and improving on that, results-wise.“

Bruno is still in with a chance of setting a new Premier League record for assists recorded during a single season by an individual player.

The benchmark stands at 20, jointly held by Thierry Henry, for Arsenal in the 2002/03 campaign, and Kevin De Bruyne, for Manchester City in the 2019/20 season.

With his current tally of 16, Bruno will hope he can rack up at least another four assists in our final eight games of the season to join Henry and De Bruyne as the joint-record holders, while five would see him become the new leading man outright in that regard.
