Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea was frustrated after the narrow defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday.
A late goal from Kortney Hause secured the visitors all three points at Old Trafford as the Reds fell to our first defeat of the Premier League campaign.
There was, however, nothing De Gea could do about the goal from the corner, having been impeded by an offside-placed Ollie Watkins in the build-up.
After the cruel end to a tense affair at the Theatre of Dreams, the 30-year-old Spaniard spoke to MUTV to assess the performance.
“It's a very disappointing day for us,”
De Gea told club media.
“I think there's no excuses today. We play at home, with confidence. If we want to win big trophies like the Premier League, [we need to win] these types of games.”
Our no.1 pulled off several stunning saves to deny Villa before their late goal, especially from a Watkins strike on 69 minutes, as the Spain international continues to show his best form.
“Yeah, I tried to make saves, always help the team,” he said.
“Big saves but at the end we concede from a set-piece and I saw the replay again and probably it's offside. He was very close to me. Again, that happens. I don't know, it's a disappointing result and a hard one to take. Now we have to be ready for the next one.”
The shot-stopper believes United created enough chances to win the game but did not want to put any blame on Bruno Fernandes, who missed a penalty in injury time.
“He's very confident, he took the ball, so we believe a lot in him,”
De Gea said about our Portuguese star.
“It's just a penalty. It's a bad kick and that happens. It's a normal thing, this is football. He's going to be the same, a top player, so it's totally fine.”
Now attention turns to our UEFA Champions League clash against Villarreal at the Theatre of Dreams, as European nights under the floodlights return to M16.
“Of course. Now it's time to recover, look at what we can improve, so yeah, another massive game on Wednesday,”
he emphasised.
“We play at home with the fans, so it's going to be a good one. Let's be ready.”
De Gea is excited for fans to return in full force for a European evening once again.
“The atmosphere in the last few games have been amazing, absolutely top from the fans,” our goalkeeper said.
“We've missed them a lot, to be honest, so hopefully we can win more games at home to make them enjoy it when they come her. Like I said, let's be ready for the game on Wednesday.”
