Diogo Dalot on brink of European glory

Diogo Dalot and Portugal are through to the UEFA European Under-21 Championship final, after knocking out holders Spain on Thursday.

The Manchester United full-back, who spent 2020/21 on loan with AC Milan, has been an ever-present in the competition, which initially began with the group stages in March.

Portugal made it through with a 100 per cent record against Croatia, England and Switzerland and then dispatched Italy in a thrilling quarter-final earlier this week.

Diogo once again played the full 90 minutes at right-back as Spain, winners of three of the past five editions of the tournament, dominated for large parts in Maribor, Slovenia but couldn’t find the breakthrough.

And Portugal netted the only goal of the game late on, when Fabio Vieira's low cross deflected off Jorge Cuenca and looped into the net.

Rui Jorge’s side will take on Germany in Ljubljana on Sunday, as they attempt to claim the title for the first time.

A squad featuring Luis Figo and Rui Costa were runners-up to Italy back in 1994, while a team packed with talent, including Joao Cancelo, Bernardo Silva and Ruben Neves, had to settle for the silver medal six years ago, when Sweden came out on top.

Dalot, who turned 22 in March but was still eligible to take part in the finals, now has the opportunity to help his country make history, after a positive season in Italy, in which he made 33 appearances for the Rossoneri, scoring twice.
