Ten Hag explains team and Eriksen absence

Erik ten Hag has explained his Manchester United line-up for the home game with Newcastle United in the Premier League.

Christian Eriksen is absent, while Anthony Martial did not make it in time to feature. Scott McTominay is suspended and Martin Dubravka is ineligible due to the terms of his loan move from the Magpies.

It all means Academy midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is on the senior bench for the first time, alongside the likes of fellow youngsters Zidane Iqbal and Alejandro Garnacho.

Marcus Rashford is also a substitute, with Jadon Sancho drafted in - one of three changes from Thursday's late win over Omonia Nicosia. Luke Shaw replaces Tyrell Malacia and Raphael Varane is back in the starting line-up for the first time since the Manchester derby.

Eriksen does not play for the first time since signing, due to illness, and Rashford is also not feeling 100 per cent, hence why he has dropped out of the XI.

“He [Eriksen] is ill, so we have some illness, also Rashford is under the weather and also feels not quite well but he has enough energy to play a couple of minutes in the game,” said Ten Hag to MUTV's Stewart Gardner pitchside.

“We can talk about the players who are not there but we have a squad. We have seen in the last couple of games, how important the squad is. With the other players, we have confidence they can do the job and beat a tough opponent.

As for 17-year-old Mainoo's inclusion, the boss added: ”It's not experience it's about, they have to deliver. You are here to contribute to the team, to the team's success, and that is why is here.“
