Harry Maguire says Manchester United have been galvanised by Michael Carrick’s appointment, following our win over Premier League leaders Arsenal.
Goals from Bryan Mbeumo, Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu and Matheus Cunha left the Gunners stunned at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
Maguire was awarded Player of the Match by Sky Sports and appeared alongside matchwinner Cunha, to discuss what the last two weeks have been like since Carrick took charge.
“Michael’s come in, he’s been brilliant with us, he’s brought a fresh energy, the group’s really galvanised,
“ he said.
Today’s victory at Arsenal comes a week after another fantastic victory - our derby win over rivals Manchester City.
“Obviously, two tough games, everyone thinks we’d come away from them with not many points, but to win both, it’s magnificent.”
Matheus Cunha came off the bench to score the winner in the 87th minute, a bending strike from outside the box, before celebrating with our travelling supporters.
The ability to introduce the Brazilian from the bench speaks volumes as to our strength in depth, believes Maguire, with players like Cunha keen to impress and stake their claim for a starting berth.
“Obviously, we’ve got a much bigger squad now, we’ve got the lads back from AFCON, obviously got players like Matheus, coming off the bench, who, I’m sure he’s not too happy sat on the bench the last couple of games, I know what he’s like and he wants to play, but I must say he’s made the difference in the two games.
“He’s come on against City and changed the game, and today again, he’s made the difference for us. It just shows the squad of players, the attacking talent that we have now to come on and do that.”
Cunha provided the assist for our second goal last weekend, his cross teeing up Dorgu at the near post.
Despite starting both games among the substitutes, Cunha remains positive about his role and just wants to aid the team in any way he can.
“I know the quality of the group, everyone has the quality to play, everyone wants to play, of course,”
our no.10 added.
“But yeah, the important decision is to help the team, come here, every single minute that you have is to give everything to help this team, to help the teammates.
“I think we did that well today.”
