Manchester United fans have been expressing their admiration for the way FC Copenhagen supporters paid tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton, during Tuesday’s Champions League match at Old Trafford.
There were poignant scenes ahead of kick-off, as piper Terry Carr played 'The Red Flag' in tribute.
Erik ten Hag, Sir Bobby's former team-mate Alex Stepney and Under-21s captain Dan Gore laid a wreath in the centre circle before a minute's silence was held. Watch the pre-match events below...
Chants of ‘One Bobby Charlton’ could be heard from the Copenhagen fans in the away end, and our respectful visitors from Denmark unfurled a banner which read:
“Passion is what separates the good from the great. Rest in peace, Sir Bobby Charlton.”
The club's official account on X later shared this image...
Plenty of United supporters responded to FC Copenhagen's post on X, thanking the club for their tributes at the Theatre of Dreams.
@GarthEthelston: “Your fans were absolutely first class last night. Made my hairs stand on end when they started singing 'there's only one Bobby Charlton'. Amazing from before the game until after. Respect.”
@Sidneymufc: “Thought that was a really nice touch last night and appreciated by a lot of people. Best of luck for the season.”
@Ant_MUFC: “Your club have got friends for life in us after last night. Top class.”
In a story featuring the photo at the top of this page, FC Copenhagen's website declared last night's attendance of 73,249 to be the second biggest crowd they had ever played in front of. In fact, it was their largest for 13 years, since 75,852 watched their 2-0 defeat to Barcelona at Camp Nou in October 2010.
Copenhagen head coach Jacob Neestrup praised the raucous fans who filled the away end at Old Trafford.
“The fans were amazing, just amazing,”
he said. “We knew that if we could do a proper job on the ball and make the opposition run a little bit more than they might have expected, then we would hear our fans throughout the game. I'm not surprised they were so good, and I'm grateful for them.
“This [Old Trafford] is an historic stadium and we pay it respect but you can't compare it to Parken. Parken is way more intense and we're looking forward to showing that when we play again in Copenhagen.”
