Michael Carrick has began his education as a coach, by sitting with the Manchester United staff in the Old Trafford dugout for the visit of Swansea City in the Premier League.
The club captain is set to take up a position as part of Jose Mourinho's backroom team in 2018/19, after confirming his plans to retire from the game at the end of this current campaign.
Ahead of kick-off against the Swans, the boss revealed the thinking behind the move and discussed how Carrick will enjoy a taste of what it will be like operating in a different role.
”He is learning, not the football of course, but the other side of the life and I think it's a good experience for him until the end of the season. Maybe, in three or four matches, it's another experience for him to share the bench from a different perspective.“

“It's only for next season really but, this season, he is already coming and sharing a little bit of our space,”said Jose. “We are opening the door for him to not have a difficult transition next season. So, this season, he's doing little things.
