Zirkzee proud of spirit Reds showed at Spurs

Joshua Zirkzee highlighted Manchester United's spirit after the Reds bowed out of the Carabao Cup at the quarter-final stage at the expense of Tottenham Hotspur.

The scoring Dutchman couldn’t hide his disappointment but was able to take some positives from United’s performance.

“Losing is never fun, especially when you know it’s another cup you could potentially win, so it’s disappointing but I think we showed great spirit as well,“ he said.

“We just kept fighting and I think we can be proud of ourselves for the fact that we never stopped.”

The substitute then went on to describe the impact his goal had on the game, as an effort to change the team’s fortunes.

After we fell 3-0 behind early in the second half, Zirkzee clawed our first goal back, which gave the Reds and our vocal travelling fans renewed hope.

Bruno Fernandes was able to intercept a pass from goalkeeper Fraser Forster and he squared the ball to the forward for a tap-in.

“I think it was good timing, you know, right in front of the fans as well.”

Seven minutes later, the tenacious Amad closed down Forster and reaped the rewards to reduce the arrears further.

“That’s just what we tried today when we came on, just bringing good energy onto the pitch and yeah, sadly, we couldn’t change it around.”

Son Heung-min’s goal, directly from a corner in the 88th minute, put the game out of reach for Amorim’s side, even if Jonny Evans was able to make it 4-3 in stoppage time.

But Joshua knows that there was little time for reflection as our focus turns now towards Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

Our no.11 added: “I think that we all know that we just have to deliver, we always have to deliver, so we’re just going to come out Sunday and make sure we get three points.”
