Fernandes says thank you to Santos

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has posted a message of gratitude to former Portugal manager Fernando Santos following the conclusion of the World Cup.

It was announced on Thursday that Santos had stepped down from his role after eight years in charge of the national team. The 68-year-old guided Portugal to victory at Euro 2016 and also at the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2019.

At the World Cup in Qatar, Santos’s Portugal topped Group H following three straight wins and the team then registered an entertaining 6-1 win over Switzerland in the last 16. However, they were eliminated at the quarter-final stage after suffering a shock defeat to surprise package Morocco.
Bruno has used his Instagram account to thank Santos.
United midfielder Fernandes was an influential member of the squad and he performed admirably at the tournament: he started all five matches, scored two goals and registered three assists.

In a touch of class, our no.8 has used his official Instagram account to share a message of thanks towards Santos, acknowledging all that he did for the national team during his reign.

“Many thanks to mister Fernando Santos,”
writes Bruno. “Thank you for the opportunity to represent our country and for the trust in us the past few years.

“As a Portuguese, thank you for putting Portugal at the top of Europe and returning confidence and belief to a
“small”
country that it was possible to be among the “big ones”.

“Moments of glory and joy and others of sadness and frustration, but history was made and will forever be marked in the hearts of all Portuguese.”
Fernandes will now turn his attention back to United and the continuation of the 2022/23 season, which resumes with a Carabao Cup tie against Burnley at Old Trafford next Wednesday.

It remains to be seen whether Bruno will be involved in that fourth-round match at the Theatre of Dreams, although Erik ten Hag has already stated in his big interview with Danny Webber that eliminated players from the World Cup will return to Carrington as quickly as possible.

Our Premier League campaign will start again on Tuesday 27 December when Nottingham Forest come to Old Trafford.
