United players express their condolences

Manchester United players are expressing their condolences following the announcement from Buckingham Palace that Her Majesty, The Queen, has passed away.

In a statement on Thursday evening, the club recognised her immense contribution to public life, including sport, both here in the United Kingdom, across the Commonwealth, and around the world.

Everyone connected with United has joined the wider football family in sending our deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to The Royal Family.

Our Europa League match against Real Sociedad went ahead following direction from the FA and UEFA, and a minute's silence was held before kick-off. Both teams wore black armbands and the stadium flags were also at half-mast.

It was announced on Friday morning that the next round of Premier League fixtures, including United's trip to Crystal Palace, have all been postponed as a mark of respect.

Club statement

Many of our players have used social media to pay their own tributes and Cristiano Ronaldo shared a very personal message, writing:
“Seven years of my career were played in the Premier League, making this my eighth season living in England.

“Throughout these years, I’ve felt the everlasting love of the UK for its Queen, and how important Her Majesty was and will forever be to the British people. I pay my respect to her memory and I mourn this irreplaceable loss with the country that I’ve learned to call home. My thoughts and prayers are with the Royal Family.”

Club captain Harry Maguire also reacted to the news by posting: “Rest in peace, Her Majesty The Queen. Thoughts are with the Royal Family at this sad time.”
