Goals by Aaron Mooy and Laurent Depoitre earned Huddersfield Town victory over an out-of-sorts Manchester United at the John Smith's Stadium, despite substitute Marcus Rashford pulling one back.
Anthony Martial had a flare-up with home skipper Tommy Smith which set the tone as the fired-up Terriers set about unsettling Jose Mourinho's men. Both players were booked. Lukaku was off target with an acrobatic volley from a cross by Ashley Young, who looked the Reds' most enterprising attacking outlet.
After Phil Jones went off injured, Mooy opened the scoring by robbing Juan Mata and feeding Tom Ince. Paul Ince's son had his shot blocked by David De Gea but Mooy followed up to clip in the rebound. The home crowd rejoiced and they could scarcely believe it, five minutes later, when a routine long kick forward by keeper Jonas Lossl was misjudged by Victor Lindelof and Depoitre rounded De Gea to double the lead.
It sparked a better spell as Lukaku stormed down the right flank and delivered a peach of a cross to the far post that was nodded home by Rashford to give the Reds hope. However, despite four minutes of injury time, United were unable to even conjure up another opportunity, until makeshift striker Chris Smalling had an effort blocked in the dying seconds, against resilient opponents who inflicted our first league defeat of the season and celebrated the final whistle wildly.
HOW MOURINHO REACTED
In his post-match interview with MUTV, Jose said: “The game is 90 minutes, it’s not 45, and it starts at 0-0, it doesn’t start 0-2. We paid the price [for] such a bad first half and when one player speaks about attitude or desire, I think it is saying everything.
“It’s not fair to say that the mistakes were responsible for the defeat, because the mistakes were in the context of the overall performance. If we are playing amazingly well and then we lose because of an individual mistake, then we can say ‘okay we lost because of an individual mistake’. But no, since the first minute, the game was poor for us. We paid the price and I think deservedly.”
