Under-18s: United 6 Birmingham 0

Manchester United beat Birmingham City 6-0 in the Under-18 Premier League Cup, to finish Group G with maximum points.

The Reds led 2-0 at the interval and a late flurry of four goals in the final 10 minutes added some gloss to the scoreline against a Blues side that were competitive and enjoyed a spell of decent pressure in the second half.

Yet there was much to enjoy about the performance from Darren Fletcher's side, who had three debutants at this age level, including goalkeeper Charlie Hardy, who made an early save to deny Joseph Ralph.

United took control though, with Junior Brown thwarted by a diving stop from Szymon Terenowicz and Gabriel also having an attempt kept out by the Blues keeper. So it was no surprise when the opener came, on 17 minutes, direct from a corner taken by full-back Jacob Watson.

Gabriel had a couple more efforts before getting on the scoresheet, just before half-time. Nkoto robbed Isifu Drammeh and used his strength to tee up Camacho. The midfielder, making his first appearance at this level, saw his shot beaten away by Terenowicz but Gabriel was on hand to convert the rebound.

Our no.10 then had another drive well saved by Terenowicz before the whistle blew for the break.

Charlie Hardy kept a clean sheet on his Under-18s debut.

James Bailey and Dante Plunkett were introduced for the start of the second half but the chances dried up somewhat, until captain Albert Mills got a touch to a Rafe McCormack free-kick but could not find the target.

Hardy prevented Birmingham scoring from a corner themselves, with a 57th-minute tip-over to stop Nikolai Degtiarev's set-piece being blown into the net.

Rooney, back in the fray, and defender Emsden-James, making his maiden appearance at this level, were brought into the action, with the Midlanders having a decent chance go wide through Degtiarev when he picked up a clearance by Hardy and tried his luck from long range.

However, United finished the game very strongly and were denied a third goal in the 78th minute, when Rooney appeared harshly ruled offside when Brown's shot was parried by Terenowicz.

The tie was made safe, though, a couple of minutes later, when McCormack met Bailey's free-kick from the right on the full, to find the net via a post.

Bailey then took a corner from the opposite flank and Jay McEvoy got in on the act, with a controlled finish to make it 4-0.

Bailey got his name on the scoresheet by thumping in number five, following a driving run by Nkoto and pass by McEvoy into the middle, and he will also be claiming an assist for the final strike.

However, it was all about Rooney, in truth, who collected the ball when it skipped across the box and, from a tight angle, flashed an explosive drive beyond Terenowicz to round things off nicely.

United top the group with nine points from three games and now await the next challenge in this competition.
