Carrick: We coped well

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick said he was “delighted” with how the Reds reacted to an action-packed second-half against Bournemouth.

We were held to a point on the south coast on Friday night, taking the lead twice through Bruno Fernandes and a James Hill own goal, with Ryan Christie and Junior Kroupi levelling the game, the latter from the spot.

Harry Maguire received a straight red card for the Cherries' second goal – having pulled back Evanilson in the box, which was deemed to be a denial of a goalscoring opportunity – but it was the first goal that caused the most controversy, as Christie scored on the end of a counterattack that began after Amad appeared to be pushed over by Adrien Truffert in the box.

The referee waved away the claims, however, with his decision supported by VAR.

See what the boss said about those two incidents, and the result in general, to Sky Sports, BBC Match of the Day and in his post-match press conference...

Report: Bournemouth 2 United 2

STRENGTH THROUGH ADVERSITY

“I was pleased with the way the boys finished the game. It's easy to let the game slip away. They kept their heads and took the point, which in the end we'll take the point and move on. Just the decision for the penalty, I don't understand how you can be one and the other and give one and not.”

SUPPORTING CAST

“Credit to Bournemouth the way they play - really energetic and positive and constantly test you. To go with 10 men for so long and having to make changes, the boys off the bench finishing the game did really well. Delighted with that seeing off the last moments that could've been really difficult but we coped well.”

IN PERSPECTIVE

“I just think this league's tough to win games in. We've won a lot of games recently, so I think the amount of points we've accumulated and some of the performances and the results that we've had I think is a big positive. Home and away, it's a tough league and it happens. You've seen how games can unfold quite quickly, but I thought we managed it, in the end, pretty well.”

AWAY WITH A POINT

“I was really pleased when we went to 10 men we saw the game out and took a point that's a real positive. In the end the way it went you can lose those games so to take a point in the end we'll take that but disappointed not to take all three.”

INTO THE BREAK

“We're in a good place, you know. We are in a decent place. We know it's for now. Of course, we need to take the breather, and some lads, obviously, a lot of boys going away and come back strong. And we’ve got a big finish to the season, you know, we've put ourselves in this position through some good work, some good results, and some good performances. And we could have had more tonight. In the end, it went against us, but we still took the point. It's not the end of the world by any stretch, and we'll come back stronger after the break.”

LOOKING TO LEEDS

“It is what it is. It's not a problem. Boys are going away and it feels a lot because of the international break but we'll be ready for Leeds when it comes.”
