Reds help Norway win Euro 2025 opener

Lisa Naalsund and Elisabeth Terland were introduced from the bench, as Norway beat Switzerland 2-1 in their opening match of Euro 2025.

The Scandinavians, who are hot favourites to top Group A, were made to work hard for the three points, with the hosts leading at half-time.

Nadine Riesen's shot went in off the post, sending the crowd at Basel's St Jakob-Park wild, but Norway wrestled the momentum from the Swiss within five second-half minutes.

Star striker Ada Hegerberg headed home at the far post to equalise, before Julia Stierli sliced an attempted clearance into her own net.

Hegerberg could have made Norway's advantage more comfortable, but she put her penalty wide of the goal.

Switzerland thought they had their own spot-kick, when the referee adjudged Riesen to have been fouled in the box, but the decision was later overturned after consultation with the VAR.

Naalsund replaced former Red Vilde Boa Risa just after the hour mark, while Terland was brought on for Hegerberg for her first minutes of the tournament.

Finland, who are Norway's next opponents, defeated Iceland 1-0 in the other Group A game.

WHO'S IN ACTION NEXT?

Group B begins on Thursday, with Belgium facing Italy and Spain taking on Portugal, while Group C follows on Friday, as Denmark play Sweden and Germany are up against Poland.

We'll have to wait until Saturday for further United involvement, although each of the four teams in Group D has a representative from Marc Skinner's squad.

Safia Middleton-Patel and Dominique Janssen could be involved in Wales v the Netherlands, while a quartet of Reds (Melvine Malard, Grace Clinton, Maya Le Tissier and Ella Toone) may feature when France are the first opposition for holders England.
