PL Collection: United's best wins over Wolves

Our Premier League Collection series concludes with the final team in the current top-flight alphabet, Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Midlands side have had three separate spells in the Premier League, totalling eight seasons so far.

Their first stint was brief, as they were relegated in 2004, a year on from promotion. They then managed three straight campaigns at the elite level between 2009 and 2012, before descending to the Championship again.

Wolves's current run in the top flight is their longest since the 1980s - the new 2022/23 season will be their fifth consecutive term in the Premier League.

They have been tricky opponents at times, denying us victory in seven of our 16 meetings so far. From United's victories, these are the four which particularly stand out…

UNITED 2 WOLVES 1 (2010/11)

Just 11 days on from a dramatic late League Cup victory against the same visitors at Old Trafford, the Reds were at it again with injury-time shenanigans, Ji-sung Park being the chief culprit this time. The South Korean scored on the stroke of half-time but when our Academy graduate Sylvan Ebanks-Blake levelled for Wolves, it looked like we’d have to settle for a frustrating point. Cue Park’s sensational second intervention, as he sashayed past several old gold-shirted defenders before finding the bottom corner and peeling away to enjoy the adulation from the Stretford End.

UNITED 4 WOLVES 1 (2011/12)

Our next Old Trafford meeting was a little more comfortable, as we brushed aside the struggling Wanderers to record a fifth Premier League win in six games. Nani and Wayne Rooney were both at the double, and each of them scored their first goals from outside the box. Steven Fletcher halved the deficit shortly after half-time, but United were not to be denied.

We completed a resounding 9-1 ‘aggregate’ win for the season by demolishing Wolves at Molineux in March. Jonny Evans scored his first-ever Reds goal in his 119th appearance and Antonio Valencia doubled our advantage before squaring for Danny Welbeck to make it three, as we ran riot against Terry Connor’s beleaguered side. Chicharito typically found space in the box to score twice in a matter of minutes before the hour mark, then we eased off in the closing stages with the job already complete.

UNITED 1 WOLVES 0 (2020/21)

The Reds looked like being frustrated for the second time in 48 festive hours as we chased Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table. Having been held at Leicester City on Boxing Day, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men struggled to create chances against Wolves in an empty Old Trafford, with the country still in the grip of the pandemic. Then, with just seconds left on the clock, Marcus Rashford cut inside from the right and, with the help of a deflection from a Wolves defender, found the bottom corner to secure a vital three points.
