Poole heads to Newport County on loan

Manchester United defender Regan Poole has joined his former club Newport County on loan for the remainder of the season.

The 20-year-old is returning his native Wales after being a regular in the Under-23s this season, captaining Ricky Sbragia’s team on occasion.

The centre-back is still Newport’s youngest-ever player after making his debut aged 16, in 2014, before making the move to Old Trafford. He has one senior appearance with United to his name, coming on as a substitute in the Europa League win over Midtjylland during the 2015/16 campaign

Having spent last season on loan with Northampton Town, this is a second temporary switch, which will see the youngster continue his development, and it will be back in familiar surroundings with the League Two side.

Newport, who are managed by Mike Flynn, caused a major upset in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup when knocking out Premier League side Leicester City. County face a trip to Middlesbrough in the fourth round on 26 January and are currently mid-table in their division.

The deal represents the second loan move of this January window for United, with Ethan Hamilton leaving for Rochdale last week and scoring on his debut.
