Ruben reflects on Senne's Schmeichel comparisons

Senne Lammens made a great first impression on his Manchester United debut, but fans and pundits must remember his young age, Ruben Amorim has urged.

The deadline-day arrival from Royal Antwerp was awarded his first appearance by Amorim in our final game before October’s international break. Lammens helped United to a dominant home victory over Sunderland, and secured a clean sheet, too.

The reaction to his performance was overwhelmingly positive, with sections of the Stretford End offering up a tongue-in-cheek rendition of ‘Are you Schmeichel in disguise?’, in reference to our legendary Danish goalkeeper.

Peter was one of several former players who gave significant praise to Lammens, describing his debut as “a really good and solid goalkeeping performance.”

Team news for Liverpool away

Senne’s display clearly gives him a strong chance of starting United’s next game, our trip to Anfield to face Liverpool on Sunday, although Amorim remained coy, even while outlining his admiration for the Belgian.

“Senne did a great job [against Sunderland],” Ruben told journalists in his pre-match press conference, conducted at Carrington on Friday lunchtime.

“It is possible he is going to start the game. The first impression in this club is really important, to maintain the level is really important and difficult.

“He is not Schmeichel. He is a young guy, he showed a lot of composure and the fans like him. He needs to show himself.”

Senne has been settling well into life in Manchester, aided by a calm personality evident from his very first day at the club and, since, on the pitch.

In conversation recently with ex-Red Fraizer Campbell, who was one of many to spend time at Antwerp as part of our former connection with the Belgian side, Lammens reflected on his start to life here.

“It was a big change in everything,” he declared.

“Every aspect is bigger but the team welcomed me with open arms. I had to build up my life here in Manchester, so it's been good.”
