Kone update after Tamworth game abandoned

Manchester United's National League Cup game at Tamworth was abandoned close to the end of the first half.

The tie was halted due to a head injury suffered by Reds midfielder Sekou Kone, inside his own box, and the youngster was taken off on a stretcher.

We can confirm Sekou is conscious, stable and communicating with United’s medical team.

He has been taken to hospital, as a precaution, for further checks.

Everybody at the club wishes him a speedy recovery.

Chido Obi started in attack but there were no goals in the tie.

United had taken the game to the hosts from the outset, with Zach Baumann threatening to open the scoring, from a James Scanlon backheel, and Jaydan Kamason firing against the near post, following a slightly scrappy period of play, and Kennedy Digie cleared the rebound.

Travis Binnion's side played at a high tempo but Tamworth enjoyed their best spell when Harvey Sayer's speculative shot skipped up to work Will Murdock for the first time. In the 27th minute, Sayer's corner was pushed out by Murdock and Digie cleverly hooked goalwards, with the ball fortunately coming back off the bar.

A lightning break by the Lambs, inspired by Kwaku Donkor, then led to Jordan Ponticelli forcing a smart save out of Murdock.

Baumann had another attempt, turned away by Jas Singh in the home goal, before the Kone incident in the final minute of the half led to the match being abandoned.

United: Murdock; Kamason, Armer, Devaney (c), Overy; Kone, T.Fletcher, Baumann; Scanlon, Obi, Mantato.

Subs not used: Byrne-Hughes, Kukonki, McAllister, Lusale, Biancheri.
