Solskjaer comments on Lingard's future

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sees Jesse Lingard as “an important player” this season who will hopefully sign a new contract with the club.

The popular Academy graduate has enjoyed a lifelong association with the Reds and he is always proud to pull on our shirt, however first-team opportunities were at a premium in 2020/21 and he spent the second half of that campaign on loan at West Ham – where he was a revelation.

Lingard returned to United in the summer and impressed everybody with his excellent performances throughout pre-season. He was deservedly set to start the Premier League opener against Leeds, until a positive test for COVID-19 unfortunately ruled him out of that eventual 5-1 victory.

Jesse remained positive and he has made an impact during his seven appearances across all competitions so far, scoring twice in wins over Newcastle and former loan side West Ham.

During a press conference to preview this Saturday’s match against Leicester City, Solskjaer was asked about Lingard’s future and speculation linking him with a transfer in January.

“Jesse has had a good start to the season, of course,”
said the manager. “He’s come on and scored a few goals for us, that’s been very important for us.
“He knows what we want, we want to prolong his contract, we see him as an important player for us, it’s obviously up to him to get more playing time, it may be up to me giving him more playing time because he deserves to but every time I pick a team, I have to leave some players out.

“Hopefully we can get a deal sorted for Jesse because we really rate him, he’s a top player and top person who’s good to have around the club.”
