United's Lionesses are Euro 2025 champions!

Congratulations to Manchester United trio Grace Clinton, Maya Le Tissier and Ella Toone who are Euro 2025 champions with England.

The Lionesses successfully defended the trophy that they won in 2022 with a 3-1 victory on penalties, after drawing 1-1 across 120 minutes of an energy-zapping finale with world champions Spain.

United's Ella Toone played 87 minutes for England and Grace Clinton was introduced in extra-time, while our captain Maya Le Tissier was an unused substitute for the winners at St. Jakob-Park in Basel, Switzerland.

Tooney lifts the trophy with former Red, England goalscorer and good friend Alessia Russo.

Toone retained her place in the XI - having started each of England's last four games on the run to the final - and was part of a vigorous Lionesses start, although it was Spain who cut through the tension to take the lead after 25 minutes.

Ella's former United team-mate Ona Batlle, Spain's right-back who departed the Reds in 2023 to join Barcelona, crossed for Arsenal midfielder and WSL Player of the Season Mariona Caldentey to head the world champions into a first-half ascendency.

One goal was enough for the Spanish team to win the 2023 World Cup final between the sides, but another former Red would have a say on the contest to ensure that wasn't the case this time around. Alessia Russo, now of Arsenal, levelled the game with a header of her own after the break to make it 1-1.

That's what the scoreline read at 90 minutes, and after a tiring extra half-hour, meaning it was penalties to decide the winner of the tournament. Spain were one-up after a kick each, but two saves from Chelsea keeper Hannah Hampton and a miss kept England alive, while successful efforts from fellow Blue Niamh Charles and City's Alex Greenwood set the stage for Arsenal's Chloe Kelly to seal the deal.

The Lionesses didn't have it easy throughout the tournament and, having come second in Group D, edged past Sweden on penalties in the quarter-finals before coming from behind to beat Italy in the semis, via a 96th-minute equaliser and a last-gasp winner in extra-time.

It's a second Euros title for Toone, who of course scored the famous opener in the 2022 final against Germany, while Clinton and Le Tissier both take home winners' medals from what is their first senior major tournament.

Congratulations to our trio - we can't wait to welcome you back to Carrington as 2025 European champions!
