Mourinho makes nine changes for Derby clash

Jose Mourinho has made wholesale changes for United’s Carabao Cup third round tie at Old Trafford against Derby County.

The manager has made nine alterations from the Reds side that started last Saturday’s 1-1 Premier League home draw with Wolves. Only Jesse Lingard and Romelu Lukaku remain in the team for the visit of Frank Lampard’s Rams.

A completely revamped back five will face the Championship outfit with Sergio Romero replacing David De Gea in goal as the Argentinian make his first United start since the final game of last season, against Watford at Old Trafford in May.
In front of him Eric Bailly and Phil Jones will form the centre of the defence, Ashley Young makes only his second start of the campaign by coming in for Luke Shaw at left-back and there is a home first-team debut for Diogo Dalot after impressing last week in the Champions League in Switzerland against Young Boys.

Nemanja Matic is back after suspension and Ander Herrera joins him in the engine room following his injury against Burnley. Juan Mata starts for the first time since Brighton away in August, after coming on as a sub against Wolves.
Mourinho told Sky Sports in his pre-match interview:
I have given a rest to Luke (Shaw), to Paul (Pogba) to Victor (Lindelof), to Valencia and to David (De Gea). I gave a rest to these five players.

"
I couldn't give much more. I had to play a very good team.“

Lampard, meanwhile, has named an unchanged line-up from Derby's 3-1 home league win over Brentford at the weekend.

United:
Romero; Dalot, Bailly, Jones, Young; Matic, Herrera, Mata, Lingard, Martial, Lukaku. Subs: Grant, Smalling, Fred, Fellaini, Darmian, McTominay, Alexis.

Derby: Carson, Forsyth, Bryson, Keogh, Tomori, Wilson, Johnson, Mount, Bennett, Nugent, Bogle. Subs: Roos, Wisdom, Waghorn, Jozefzoon, Marriott, Huddlestone, Malone.

Congratulations, David!
