Manchester United's Under-21s progressed to the quarter-finals of the Premier League 2 play-offs after edging past Sunderland on Sunday afternoon.
The Reds seized command of the round-of-16 tie with goals from Chido Obi and Jack Fletcher, before Felix Scott reduced the deficit for the visitors.
Shea Lacey’s solo run and finish restored United’s two-goal advantage but Jack Whittaker ensured a nervy finish at the Progress With Unity Stadium.
Adam Lawrence’s side held on to advance to the last eight, where we will face an away tie between Friday 1 and Monday 4 May - with our opponents yet to be decided.
United were handed this home tie after finishing second in the league phase of the competition, having narrowly lost out on the title to Chelsea on goal difference.
FIRST HALF - REDS AHEAD AT THE BREAK
There were a mixture of Under-18s and Under-21s players in the matchday squad for the Reds, who were looking to return to winning ways after that 3-1 defeat by Newcastle in our final regular-season outing.
It was the visitors from Wearside - who finished 15th in the 29-team table - who started the brighter in the Leigh sunshine. A first-time snapshot from Jaydon Jones went wide, before Charlie Dinsdale ran onto Scott’s lay-off but hit the ball into the ground as Will Murdock made a comfortable save.
Black Cats captain Harrison Jones was perhaps fortunate to only receive a yellow card from referee Niall Smith for a late challenge on Sonny Aljofree, as the Reds captain for the day cleared the ball.
United, nevertheless, opened the scoring on the quarter-hour mark as Obi ran onto Jack Moorhouse’s threaded pass and kept his composure to find the bottom corner.
The lively Lacey forced two smart saves from Sunderland keeper Isaac Allan, before Jack Fletcher doubled the Reds’ lead on 27 minutes. Moorhouse’s shot was initially blocked on the line after positive work down the right channel by Lacey and the midfielder was on hand to calmly slot home the loose ball.
However, just three minutes later, Sunderland pulled a goal back as Scott pounced on defensive lapses from Godwill Kukonki and Dan Armer to roll the ball underneath Murdock.
At the other end, Obi came close to scoring his second from a tight angle after intercepting a defensive pass but Allan rushed off his goalline to make a fine block.
SECOND HALF - UNITED HOLD ON TO ADVANCE
It was an open start to proceedings as Lacey bent a left-footed shot over the crossbar before Jenson Jones advanced from right-back for Sunderland and brought a routine save from Murdock.
As he grew into the game for United, Victor Musa saw an effort deflect over from just outside the box and later rifled another shot harmlessly over the crossbar.
The Reds began to take control as Aljofree headed over Jack Fletcher’s cross from six yards before Lacey weaved into the box, after Tyler Fletcher won back possession, and stroked into the bottom corner to make it 3-1.
Lacey almost added to his goal with a curling left-footer from inside the box which Allan tipped around the post, before miscuing another shot which went off target. The Black Cats stopper was kept busy throughout the afternoon and he was called upon again to push Obi’s right-footed strike behind from 20 yards.
But the visitors halved the deficit in the 73rd minute. Whittaker - who had missed an earlier chance - capitalised on Tyler Fletcher’s heavy touch from Murdock’s goal-kick and steadied himself before guiding the ball into the net.
Head coach Lawrence freshened things up on the right flank for the closing stages by introducing Yuel Helafu and Samuel Lusale in place of Jaydan Kamason and Lacey.
The Reds looked to counter attack in a bid to grab the decisive next goal as Tyler Fletcher burst forward and saw a shot deflect narrowly beyond the post.
It ended up being tense for the Reds in the final minutes as Murdock made a save from a tame shot by Sunderland sub Lewis Campbell and Aljofree made an important block to thwart Jenson Jones’s progress.
The final whistle was met with relief and joy as United made it through to the next stage of the play-offs, as we look to repeat our success in the competition of 2012/13, 2014/15 and 2015/16.
