The 196th Manchester derby is fast approaching and at 16:30 BST on Sunday, our city will collide at Old Trafford.
A fierce rivalry, hundreds of Reds past and present have experienced the buzz and intensity of this great fixture.
Ahead of Sunday's match, we contacted many former United players on Instagram to ask for their favourite memories about the matches they played against Man City.
From Argentina - where Marcos Rojo and Ander Herrera play for Boca Juniors - to Saudi Arabia - where Chris Smalling is currently based - we spoke to a host of Reds who played pivotal roles in historic matches against our local rivals...
Marcos Rojo
Rojo plays for Boca Juniors now but took part in many a Manchester derby during his time in M16. The former United defender reflected on his memories of this match:
“I have many fantastic memories of that game but my favourite was the following game attached, we won and it was my birthday!!”
The match Marcos was referring to was our 1-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium on 20 March 2016, where a certain Marcus Rashford scored the winner.
Ander Herrera
Also at Boca Juniors, Ander recalled three key wins over City that are memorable for him:
“I would say 4-2 at home in my first season at the club and also 3-2 away when we came back from 2-1 down in the first half. Also when we beat them 1-0 at home in the Carabao Cup and we ended up winning the competition.”
Scott McTominay
Scott played in a lot of derbies during his time at United, both in our academy and first team. He scored in our 2020 triumph at Old Trafford and this game is the one that stands out to the Napoli midfielder most:
“My favourite memory has to be the goal in 2020, I still get goosebumps about the crowd and the atmosphere after the game! The derby is a special match and I wish you all the best, a big win.”
Juan Mata
Juan had a similar message of encouragement for Sunday's fixture:
“It has to be the goal I scored vs them in our victory at Old Trafford in 2015. But Wayne's bicycle goal was probably the all-time most iconic goal in a derby. Derby means pride, history, passion, legacy. Let's win the derby!!”
Chris Smalling
Scorer of our winner in the 3-2 comeback success in 2018, it's safe to say Chris has some fond memories of the Manchester derby:
“Hmm, too many memories! Personally my very first derby (Rooney overhead kick) is hard to beat. Although goals in the Community Shield and then the 3-2 comeback are some of the best memories too. Even though I am not Mancunian I was made aware of the rivalry from the very first day. From players, staff, fans, I knew how much it meant to everyone on derby day. To have played a part in some epic memories is an honour and these matches will stay with me forever!”
Javier Hernandez
Chicharito also referred to that iconic Rooney goal when recalling his favourite derby moment:
“That derby meant to me so much always. You want to prove you're the best team in the city! My favourite moment is the game where we beat them in Old Trafford and Wazza scored that bicycle kick goal from Nani's cross.”
