State of play: United in the WSL's European race

The Barclays Women's Super League returns this weekend and Manchester United are part of the pack aiming to secure UEFA Champions League qualification in the final stretch of the season.

The Reds have three games left and currently occupy fourth position in the standings, outside of the top-three spots on goal difference.

Finishing among that trio will see Marc Skinner's side qualify for the Champions League for the third time in four years, and that is a primary goal for our run-in.

League leaders Manchester City have already secured their European ticket for 2026/27, but two spaces remain up for grabs as the division prepares to resume after the recent international break.

When are United Women back in action?

WSL'S EUROPEAN RACE AS IT STANDS

2nd: Chelsea - 19 games played, 40 points
3rd: Arsenal - 17 games played, 38 points
4th: UNITED - 19 games played, 38 points
5th: Spurs - 19 games played, 29 points

Just two points separate second-place Chelsea and United in fourth, although it is worth saying that Arsenal, occupying third at present, do have two games in hand on both teams.

Spurs are still in contention too, but would need to win all of their remaining matches to stand any chance of achieving an unlikely qualification, and hope for a lot of favours elsewhere.

The Londoners are our next opponents in a midday kick-off on Sunday, at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Skinner's Reds then host Brighton on 2 May before a potentially pivotal final-day trip to Chelsea, two weeks later.

Winning all three of those fixtures won't be easy but would confirm a return to the Champions League for United, regardless of results elsewhere, as the Reds would have enough points to leapfrog the Blues.

Reigning champions Chelsea visit Goodison Park to face Everton on Sunday and also have a trip to bottom side Leicester City before hosting United on 16 May.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have a Champions League semi-final first leg at home to OL Lyonnes before they play again in the WSL, and will have three games in hand on the pack when they return to domestic action against Leicester next Wednesday.

After the second leg of their European tie in France, the Gunners are due to travel to Brighton and Aston Villa, welcome Everton to the Emirates Stadium, and finish their campaign at Liverpool.

Their north London rivals Spurs need to beat us this weekend to stay in the mix, and get three points in their remaining clashes with London City Lionesses and Brighton, should their hopes still be alive.
