Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to Valencia on Wednesday evening means the Reds finish second in Group H of the Champions League.
An away win in Spain would have meant the Reds topped the table, with Juventus losing 2-1 to Young Boys, but the defeat confirmed our runners-up spot and means we will face a side who finished first in another pool.
United can face six of the eight teams who finished first in their respective groups. At this stage in the tournament clubs from the same country cannot be drawn together, so we will not be paired with Manchester City. We cannot face Juventus either, as they also qualified through Group H.
WHO CAN WE FACE?
Borussia Dortmund - The current Bundesliga leaders topped a tough group including Atletico Madrid, and picked up 13 points from their six games.
Barcelona - We haven’t met the Catalan side in a competitive game since the 2011 Champions League final. We also played them in the 2009 final and 2008 semi-finals.
Paris Saint-Germain - Surprisingly, we have never faced PSG in a competitive European game. The Ligue 1 outfit won a challenging group ahead of Liverpool, with Napoli dropping into the Europa League.
Porto - Jose Mourinho won Europe’s elite competition with the Portuguese club in 2004. We have played Porto eight times over the years, including the 2009 quarter-final which the Reds won 3-2 on aggregate.
Bayern Munich - Our famous opponents in the 1999 Champions League final reached the last 16 of this year's competition as group winners, after drawing 3-3 with Ajax on Wednesday night.
Real Madrid - The most successful side in European Cup history and the current holders of the trophy. We last played Los Blancos in last year’s UEFA Super Cup final in Macedonia.
