Twenty years on from David Beckham's United departure

Saturday 17 June 2023 13:00

It’s exactly 20 years to the day since Manchester United legend David Beckham called time on his iconic Reds career.

A member of the illustrious ‘Class of 92’ and an FA Youth Cup winner, David made the journey from a fledgling prospect at the club to one of the greatest players to ever grace the Old Trafford turf.

Just under 11 trophy-ladened years after his senior debut in 1992, Beckham made the switch from Manchester to Madrid, joining Real in the summer of 2003.

To this day, David’s story retains its prestige as one of the all-time great careers for a player while donning the badge of Manchester United.

To mark the occasion, here are seven Opta stats that highlight David's brilliance in the English game.

A marauder down the right wing, United's former no.7 scored 85 times in 394 appearances for the club, as a central figure across a storied period in our history.

‘Becks’ won six Premier League titles - the last one lifted after his final Reds appearance, away to Everton, in May 2003 - two FA Cups and a Champions League among his major honours as a Red and celebrated all three aforementioned prizes as part of our Treble-winning team in 1998/99.

The ex-England international – who received 115 caps for his nation - went on to become a La Liga champion during his time with Real Madrid and would go on to add to his successful club career after leaving the Bernabeu in 2007, following spells with LA Galaxy, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain prior to his retirement in 2013.

Since hanging up his boots, David has stayed in the game in multiple ways – including through current roles upstairs at Inter Miami and Salford City - and despite being busy with those, he still finds time to follow the Reds.

You may have seen viral videos of Beckham celebrating Bruno Fernandes’s penalty at this month’s Emirates FA Cup final, while he watched on from the Wembley stands.

He’s also notably been back to Old Trafford to play in several charity matches since calling time on his playing career, most recently for our 2019 Treble Reunion match against Bayern Munich, in which he memorably found the net.
