James Garner's superb loan spell with Nottingham Forest will hopefully help him along the path to achieving his ambition of becoming a regular in the Manchester United first team.

The 20-year-old spent 2020/21 in the Championship, first with Watford and then Forest, and will return to the Aon Training Complex with valuable experience under his belt and brimming with confidence after proving his qualities with a string of excellent performances for Chris Hughton's side in the second half of the campaign.

Talks are now planned with the United staff over the best option for the youngster, who is hoping to force his way into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's plans.

The United youngster closed out his loan spell at Nottingham Forest with a pearler against Preston.

Garner was asked by Inside United, the official magazine, if the plan was to come back stronger and better equipped for the Premier League.

"I’ve been working hard, physically and mentally, and it’s something I’m trying to add into my game," he explained. "Hopefully, when I come back at the end of the season, I’ll sit down with the coaches and see what’s best for me and what’s going to be best for my development.

“I’ll take it from there really.”

With the loan an unqualified success, he is on the right path to realising his ambition of patrolling the midfield regularly for United in the future.

"I think that’s ultimately the dream," he admitted. "I’ve been at the club since seven or eight and the main focus is to be in the first team and do whatever takes to be with the first team.

“Like I’ve said, I’ll just keep working hard, keep my head down and have to see what is going to be best for my development. But, ultimately, my dream is to be with the first team and play for United."”

Garner made his senior debut in the win at Crystal Palace in February 2019 and also appeared in the Premier League victory over Norwich City in the following season.

He has amassed seven appearances for Ole's men in total and was the 2019/20 Denzil Haroun Player of the Year.

The Birkenhead-born prospect scored four times for Forest, including a long-range beauty in their final game of the campaign against Preston North End.
