Aaron Wan-Bissaka scoring v Newcastle

Wan-Bissaka: I just wanted to smash it

Sunday 18 October 2020 08:00

Aaron Wan-Bisska crowned his 50th Manchester United appearance with an incredible first professional goal.

Our right-back rifled in the Reds' third as we ran out 4-1 winners at St. James' Park on Saturday evening. Wan-Bissaka recieved the ball from Marcus Rashford before hammering the ball home from inside the box to Newcastle's despair.

Speaking after the match, the 22-year-old defender was naturally very happy.

"It's a good feeling, quite an inspiring one. It was a good team performance as well," Wan-Bissaka told MUTV.

"I just wanted to smash it. The keeper had been saving a few shots during the game so I thought "this time, let me just roof it.""

Our no. 29, who arrived at Old Trafford last summer from Crystal Palace, was asked if he remembers his last goal at youth level.

"I do, you know," Wan-Bissaka said. "It was for Palace, from a corner. It was crossed in and I volleyed it in but that was a long time ago."

Following the rocket in the North East, he's looking to add to his tally.

"After that went in, the confidence is there to push on more."

Bruno Fernandes, who was voted the Man of the Match against the Magpies, praised our right-back after his first goal but admits he was surprised to see a goal of that quality.

"We didn’t know he could shoot," Fernandes joked to MUTV.

"It’s difficult to believe that he can score because we never see him shoot. We were joking to him in the dressing room, saying that we all thought he wanted to cross and he had a bad one and scored."

Also United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took a friendly little dig at his right-back.

"It's a cross! No, he was due his goal. I thought today we wanted him higher up the pitch, making runs in behind. It was great for him," Ole said.

Despite his colleagues' scepticism, the goalscorer assured us: "This one was a shot."

Bruno: This team has big characters

Bruno Fernandes praised United's mentality after an impressive win at Newcastle.

Fernandes hopes there's more attacking output coming from Wan-Bissaka this season.

"I’m happy for him, he deserved to involved in these situations," Bruno said about his team-mate.

"We want him to be more positive, more in the box, because he has such great qualities. Everyone knows him as a defensive player but he can show more as an offensive player. I think he has the quality to do that."
