Garnacho nominated for Puskas Award

Tuesday 03 December 2024 09:20

Alejandro Garnacho's stunning bicycle kick at Everton is one of 11 strikes in the running for the 2024 edition of FIFA's prestigious Puskas Award.

Named after the legendary Hungarian forward Ferenc Puskas, a renowned scorer of spectacular goals, this year's accolade celebrates the best efforts scored between 21 August 2023 and 10 August 2024.

Garnacho's amazing strike, which unsurprisingly he classes as his best in a United shirt so far, won our Goal of the Season vote in 2023/24 and was also named the Premier League's finest of the last campaign.

Now, you can help him top a worldwide vote...

You can vote for Garnacho on the FIFA website and also watch the other 10 nominated strikes.

It may be worth reminding yourself how stunning our no.17's goal - scored just minutes into our eventual 3-0 win on Merseyside - was too!

There are no other Premier League efforts nominated, although West Ham's Mohammed Kudus is a contender after scoring a fine individual goal in the Europa League, while Jaden Philogene - then of Hull City, now of Aston Villa - is also in the running, with a rare rabona.

The prize includes goals scored all around the world, from Federico Dimarco's Serie A effort for Internazionale and Terry Antonis's goal for Melbourne City, through to internationals strikes by Hassan Al Haydos (Qatar), Yassine Benzia (Algeria) and Michaell Chirinos (Costa Rica).

Walter Bou, Denis Omedi and Paul Onuachu round off the shortlist for an award first presented in 2009.

Cristiano Ronaldo was the inaugural winner, following his rocket from miles out at Porto in the final season of his first spell with the Reds.

Neymar, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and James Rodriguez added to the prize's prestige with victories in 2011, 2012 and 2014 respectively.

There was a spell of Premier League dominance between 2017 and 2021, as Olivier Giroud, Mohamed Salah, Son Heung-min and Erik Lamela all tasted success.

The holder of the award is Guilherme Madruga, who netted an outside-of-the-box overhead kick for second-tier Brazilian side Botafogo-SP in June 2023.

Hopefully Garna can add his name to the list when first place is announced at The Best FIFA Football Awards ceremony - make sure you vote for the Argentina international before 10 December, so he can be in with the best chance of winning!
