Garnacho praises United's mentality in comeback win
Alejandro Garnacho praised the mentality shown by Manchester United to come from a goal down to beat Brentford 2-1 at Old Trafford.
Ethan Pinnock's header deep into first-half stoppage time put Brentford in front at the break, but Garnacho was pleased with the performance the Reds had already given up to the interval.
"We are very happy. But I think we also played a good performance in the first half - we came in [at half-time] 1-0 down. But I think we played, in general, a very good game," he told MUTV after the final whistle.
Garnacho: We tried that in training!
Alejandro Garnacho says his goal against Brentford came straight from the training ground…
Our No.17 acknowledged that the Reds were "very angry" at being temporarily reduced to 10 players for the moment Brentford got their goal, with Matthijs de Ligt off the pitch for treatment on a head injury.
"But, with good mentality, we came back in the game," he explained.
Mentality was an important factor in his own performance, with Bees goalkeeper Mark Flekken twice saving from Garna in the first half. But when the match resumed, only a couple of minutes had passed before he fired United level with something that had been worked on in training with Marcus Rashford.
"I missed two big chances in the first half, but I came back in the second half with the same mentality, trying to score and win the game, and, finally, I could do it," he said.
"I know [Rashford can do this] because we tried it in training this week. I know he has a very good cross and I have to be ready in the back post. When he crossed it, I shot first time and I scored, so I’m happy."
That goal drew United level, with Rasmus Hojlund going on to score the winner 15 minutes later. It was an excellent finish from the Dane, set up by an equally brilliant flick from Bruno Fernandes, but Garnacho was so impressed with Hojlund's overall contribution, he said it was the "worst" thing he did.
"I think the goal was the worst part of his performances because he held the ball very well and gave breath to the team! It was important for us and for the counter attack, so I'm very happy for him also."
