Alessia Russo loves scoring against Arsenal.

The Manchester United forward has netted in our last four meetings with the Gunners, including Wednesday night’s decisive strike in a 1-0 win at Leigh Sports Village.

Following the victory, which saw the Reds extend our lead at the top of the Women's Super League to four points, our no.23 talked through the process of scoring yet another monumental effort for United against our north London visitors, five months on from her headed winner at the Emirates.

“When Keets [Nikita Parris] gets the ball, I want to try and get in the box,” she said in an interview with BBC Sport.
“I think we have really direct, powerful wingers so I want to get in the box and it was a great pick out from Keets.

“I always seem to be falling over when I shoot at the minute!

“I’m just glad it hit the back of the net.”
Russo continued: “Their backline dropped quite [deep] so I just hung around on the edge of the box, which is normally where our no.10 would pick up, but it broke quite quickly.

“I just thought I’d hang back and was fortunate to get the ball."
Russo and Parris combined for the game-winning goal on Wednesday evening.
With just four games remaining in the WSL, as well as an FA Cup final to come, Russo says there is a ‘buzz’ at United.

“I think there’s always a buzz in our changing room," she explained. "We have such a good group of girls and the team dynamic is really special.

“I think that shows on nights like this; when it gets a bit tough, we all know we’ve got each other’s backs.”

Skinner: I'm proud of the players

Marc Skinner was delighted with the 'resilience' shown by his players to complete the league double over Arsenal...

From players and staff, there was a real sense of pride at being able to grind out a huge victory over one of our title rivals.

“Tonight we were just really proud,” our no.23 echoed. “We’ve had a heavy week coming off internationals and going into the FA Cup and then this game tonight.

“Credit to the players and staff, everyone was fit and healthy and ready to go, and now we recover and get ready for Villa.”
