Who's won September Goal of the Month?

Wednesday 06 October 2021 12:00

Brazilian left-back Alex Telles has claimed Manchester United’s Goal of the Month award for September 2021, as reward for his sensational volley against Villarreal in the UEFA Champions League.

You never get a second chance to make a first impression, so the saying goes, and it seems the 28-year-old has taken that advice to heart.

The former Porto man was brilliant on his United debut – in a back five away to Paris Saint-Germain – and left a similarly memorable imprint with his first goalscoring effort for the club.

Fans were able to choose from 12 strikes in our GOTM poll, but Telles emerged as the clear winner, even beating contributions from serial winners Bruno Fernandes (the winner of last month’s award) and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Relive the moment that earned Alex Telles September 2021's Goal of the Month award...

It’s Telles's first personal award since joining the club just over a year ago, and a sign of both the quality and the value of the goal in question.

United were 1-0 down to Unai Emery’s team on matchday two of the Champions League group stage, having already lost against Young Boys in Bern on matchday one.

A second defeat would have left us bottom of Group F, with tough away trips to both Atalanta and Villarreal still to come.
So when Bruno’s dinked corner drifted towards Telles at the edge of the penalty area, something very special was required.

The Portuguese’s pass was accurate enough, but not perfect. Alex noticeably had to readjust his body to ensure he connected effectively with the ball, but he calmly got himself into position.

What came next was emphatic. An arrow-straight left-footed bullet, which zipped through the crowded box and past the partially unsighted Geronimo Rulli in the Villarreal goal. The Stretford End erupted.

Why did Alex cut his hair?

United went on to win 2-1 thanks to Ronaldo’s momentous late winner, but the importance of Telles’s masterpiece has clearly not been forgotten by the Red Army.

The Brazilian garnered a massive 49 per cent of the overall vote, clearly beating Bruno’s long-range stunner against Newcastle and Jesse Lingard’s match-winning strike at West Ham.

Here are the full results…
