Amad makes 50th United appearance

Monday 13 January 2025 10:41

Amad made his 50th Manchester United appearance during Sunday's penalty shootout win over Arsenal, in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup.

The Ivorian, who entered the fray as a substitute in the 80th minute, replacing Alejandro Garnacho, helped 10-man United negotiate extra time and penalties, as we came out on top 5-3 on spot-kicks, after a 1-1 draw during the game.

While Kai Havertz saw his effort saved by Altay Bayindir, Amad was among the five Reds to nervelessly convert from 12 yards, capping off a memorable week for him individually.

Our no.16 signed a new long-term contract with the club on Thursday and we thought now was the perfect time to review some of his key moments in red so far...

5 OCTOBER 2020 - AMAD SIGNS

We clinched the signature of Amad - then an exciting 18-year-old winger with Atalanta - on deadline day in October 2020, although he didn't arrive in England until the following January. The Ivorian had, the previous year, become the first player born in 2002 to score in Serie A, netting on his league debut against Udinese.

18 FEBRUARY 2021 - UNITED DEBUT

Amad’s first appearance for the club came during a 4-0 win against Real Sociedad in the Europa League, in a game played in Turin, Italy due to Covid-19 restrictions. He came on in the 83rd minute, and while not having too much time to assert himself, he still managed to show flashes of his potential when the ball arrived at his feet.

11 MARCH 2021 - AMAD OPENS ACCOUNT

Amad’s first goal for the Reds was an early sign of the special talent he is. Coming against Italian giants AC Milan, Bruno’s clipped ball into the box was cleverly headed home, with the winger using the back of his head to outfox Milan keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Although the Rossoneri would later equalise, United edged the return in Italy to progress to the Europa League quarter-finals.

31 AUGUST 2022 - SUNDERLAND LOAN CONFIRMED

Sunderland played a huge hand in helping develop Amad’s game as a youngster, as he was a standout performer across a season where the Black Cats made the Championship play-offs. The Ivorian made 37 appearances, scoring 13 goals, including a 25-yard free-kick against Luton in the play-off semi-finals. His season-long heroics helped earn him the EFL Young Player of the Year Award.

17 MARCH 2024 - THAT WINNER AGAINST LIVERPOOL

The moment that kickstarted Amad’s senior United career came in the most dramatic game of the season. A quarter-final FA Cup tie against our Merseyside rivals was end-to-end for 120 minutes, and with the score at 3-3 with seconds to go, it looked like it was heading for penalties.

A clearance from a Liverpool corner fell to Harvey Elliott, but Amad’s clever intuition meant he pounced on the midfielder and quickly snatched the ball from him, resulting in a counter-attack featuring him and Alejandro Garnacho. The Argentina international advanced and, when Amad received the return ball from Garnacho, he glided the ball perfectly into the corner, leaving Old Trafford to erupt.

15 DECEMBER 2024 - DERBY DECIDER

This season, Amad has asserted himself as one of the first names on the team-sheet, putting in consecutive impressive performances. This includes last month’s fixture against rivals City, in which he netted a terrific winner.

Amad won the late penalty, which Bruno Fernandes netted and was then quick to deliver the knockout blow, making a run from deep to latch on to Lisandro Martinez's clever lobbed pass. The winger's touch was brilliant to take the ball away from Ederson, and he finished it off from a close angle to steal the game away from the Blues.

9 JANUARY 2025 - COMMITTING HIS FUTURE

Amad’s impressive run of form was aptly awarded with a long-term contract, keeping him at the club until at least 2030.

Speaking to MUTV, he admitted it was an easy decision to make, saying: “I work very hard to achieve a lot of things with this club. Today, I’m so happy to extend for five more years.

“I want to be here for a long, long, long time. Not just five more years, but maybe for all my life.”
