Why Amad has a spring in his step

Manchester United winger Amad says he is arriving at Carrington with more belief and a burning desire after his recent comeback from a long-term injury lay-off.

In an exclusive interview which features inside the Tottenham edition of United Review, our official matchday programme, the 21-year-old explains that he’s got a pep in his step on the way into our training ground, after returning from the sidelines during our recent trip to Nottingham Forest.

Amad had been out of action after suffering an untimely knee problem in pre-season, having just reverted from a successful loan spell with Sunderland, but was reintegrated into the matchday squad for the late-December trip to The City Ground.

Five key quotes from the winger's insightful interview that you can read in the Spurs edition of our matchday programme.

He unfortunately missed Monday’s Emirates FA Cup victory at Wigan due to illness but will be hoping to be involved again against Spurs on Sunday, as our focus returns to Premier League matters, off the back of his second-half introduction in the 2-1 defeat at Forest.

“We lost that match but now I've come in with more belief and with the desire to help the team as I’ve always wanted to do, and I want to continue on this path,” he says.

“Whenever the coach calls me up or sends me on the pitch, I want to be always present to help the team.”
The Ivorian tells us that it meant a lot for him to have the trust of Erik ten Hag in Nottingham and to be tasked with making an impact, immediately after his extended period out.

Our no.16 was introduced in the 54th minute of the match – with the game firmly balanced at 0-0 – and although the Reds lost the contest in the end, Amad has been able to take confidence from what was a positive cameo off the right flank.

“Well, to be honest, I wasn't expecting to play so soon,” he recalls of being brought on by the manager.

“I thought I would maybe be playing for the last 10 or 15 minutes because I was coming back from an injury but the fact that he brought me on at that moment meant that the coach trusted me, and I was really happy to have played in that match.

“I would have preferred us to win that match, yes we lost, but now we'll focus on the next matches.”

During the United Review conversation, Amad provides a fascinating insight into the relationships he has with his team-mates, as well as the boss.

“Working with him is really something that doesn't happen every day,” the winger details about Erik.

“He is a person who wants to work hard; even in training and when you're going slowly, he calls you over and tells you to go stronger.

“I like coaches like that, that let you know that you need to train hard. My relationship with him is a good relationship.”
